How does an All-Star gym work?

An All-Star gym provides a well-equipped location to train athletes in all of the required cheerleading and dance skills. Skills including tumbling, jumps, stunting, motions, and dance, as well as other team performance related aspects such as synchronization, timing, energy and expression. A gym provides a solid background in teamwork, physical fitness and excellent work ethics. All-Star gyms also develop and perfect skills that allow athletes to move on to the college level and increase opportunities for them to receive scholarships in the sport of cheerleading and dance.

Most gyms have tryouts as early as March or April for the upcoming season. At that time, athletes are placed on the team that is appropriate for their skill level and begin training for the next championship season. All-Star gyms send their teams to multiple championships throughout the U.S. to represent their gym, show off their skills and have fun. At these championships, All-Star teams will compete by performing a 2 to 2 ½ minute routine that contains all the required skills of cheerleading and dance.

Tips on Choosing the Right All-Star Gym

  1. Ask the coaches for the required practice schedule for the team your child will be on, as well as the championships their team will be attending. Make sure that the schedule fits within your schedule so you can ensure your child will be able to attend the mandatory practices.

  2. Find out about pre- and post-tryout training that your child can attend to help increase their cheerleading and dance skills. Note! This additional training is widely used for kids to prepare for tryouts for high school and college teams.

  3. Ask about the gym’s policies for missing practices.

  4. Make sure the gym is insured and has a well-trained coaching staff that promotes a safe and positive environment.

  5. Ask for references for the coaching staff and gym owner to ensure that they can provide the best possible experience for your child.

  6. Find out what type of coaching style or philosophy the staff tends to follow. Some gyms are highly competitive and require intense training, while others are established as a fun recreational activity. Depending on your child’s goals, make sure the gym is a good fit. Ask parents how they’re experience has been with the staff and gym as a whole.

  7. Ask about all required costs for your child to be part of the All-Star experience such as team tuition, uniform and shoes, championship fees, and traveling to championships. Sometimes championship schedules are not available at the time of tryouts, so ask for the estimated number of championships that the coach thinks that the team will be competing at and the estimated cost.
